Beautiful Concrete

apartments.jpg
Of Beijing’s modern architecture, the apartment buildings are the most interesting. They are full of facets, indentations, and overhangs that make each building unique and geometrically beautiful. Here are a few photos I’ve taken since I first arrived last July. View the complete album here.

Sorry for the gap in posts. Work was pretty busy last week.

Sihui Qiao

Another decent day in Beijing, and with the day off I explored some new areas. I went to the south east of Beijing and walked down a railroad for a couple hours and took photographs of nearby construction areas. It’s so sad too see how many beautiful Houtongs are being plowed over and replaced by concrete towers. View the entire album here.

This is Frightening

Top photo was taken today. Bottom photo taken a week ago.
Note: In the bottom photo the CCTV building is not even visible.

Today was beautiful in Beijing, the sky was remarkably blue and the air so fresh. This is very uncommon here. On most days the city is submerged in a milky white haze. In the city’s defense, the air pollution cannot be attributed to only fossil fuel consumption. It’s that of course, but also dust and debris from the abundant construction, and fine sand that blows in from the Gobi desert. Anyway, here’s a visual representation of how bad the air can get in Beijing. Both photographs were taken at noon, only a week apart, and with the same camera settings.

I don’t know why I keep putting off buying a face mask. Maybe this stark comparison will motivate me to. More on this craziness later.

Jianwai SOHO

Yet another update… Hopefully I can keep up this pace. Jianwai SOHO is the area of Beijing that I work in. For Beijing it’s quite modern. Some late nights here remind me of scenes from Bladerunner. View the entire album here.

Back to Beijing

The first time flying to Beijing I assumed we would be headed east. To my surprise we went directly north, right over the Northpole. Here are a few photographs I took along the way. Several from the flight and a couple just after settling back into my Beijing apartment. Included in the album are some aerial views of northern Russia, Mongolia and a few closeups of the icecaps.
