One pursuit of this film was to explore the relationship between the picture and sound. During the storyboarding phase, I began writing short piano motifs. While drafting concept art, I composed environmental soundscapes to accompany them. Because both evolved simultaneously, they were influenced by each other's ideas. My hope is that this process has created a symbiotic relationship where all visual and auditory elements are interconnected and inseparable.
Silhouette was an experiment in merging live action and environmental CG. Instead of treating the CG elements to look photo-realistic, I decided to abstract both sources and find a visual meeting point between the two. This allowed the freedom to explore and experiment with different techniques and aesthetics. The music was a collaboration between myself and Suraj Gopal. You can listen to the complete track, 120th Silhouette on Virb.
As strange as it might sound, the majority of this short was created in Photoshop. I shot several minutes of video and batch processed the image sequences in PS. It was interesting how this technique involved the computer in the creative process. For every sequence, I would open the first frame and tweak it while recording my action history, then later batch process the remaining frames. It was always exciting to come back to see what the computer had done while I was away!
